McCanly, Um..I Mean McCauley Named to Thorpe List

When a major college football award misspells your name on their watch list, either A. It was an oversight or B. You are an underrated, overlooked talent, and no one bothered to check if your name was correct or not. Hopefully, they will correct it soon.

Cornerback Marcus McCauley is one just 32 defensive backs named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. The only other WAC player on the list is Nevada CB Joe Garcia.

McCauley is one of 15 CBs on the list. I am just a little puzzled how he got on the list. Believe me, he deserves to be on the list, but according to the Jim Thorpe Award site, the list is derived using a point system.

The watchlist is derived through a point system based on All-American teams and Honorable Mentions published in at least six preseason football magazines. A candidate must be listed as high as third-team All-American in at least one publication or as a fourth team or honorable mention in at least three of these publications.

McCauley was underrated by many preseason publications. Phil Steele rated him the 11th best CB in the nation and Lindy's rated him No. 17. But the Sporting News did not rank him among their top 20 CBs. I am not sure about any other pubs, because I didn't bother to read them or they did not list top players besides their All-American teams. I didn't see his name on any preseason All-American teams, however, he was a unanimous pick for first team all-WAC.
