Toledo's head coach Tom Amstutz was born and raised in Toledo, and is a 1977 graduate of the University. He is dedicated to building the Toledo program and taking it to national prominence, much like what Pat Hill is continuing to do at Fresno State.
Former Rocket head coach Gary Pinkel left for Missouri after the Rockets 10-1 finish in 2000. Amstutz followed Pinkel to Missouri and was an assistant for only two weeks before being named head coach at Toledo.
Toledo will be making its 16th national television appearance since Amstutz became head coach at the start of the 2001 season. Toledo only made nine national television appearances prior to 2001. The Rockets have also won two conferences titles under his leadership and have been to a bowl three out of his four years.
There are no two better coaches that are trying to build a program outside the BCS than the two that will meet Tuesday night.
